What We Do Images

At Bike4Health we believe that educating children how to incorporate the bike into their lives is important, and that by introducing them to cycling related activities from a young age we may be able to foster a passion for cycling, whilst also providing them an opportunity to maintain a good level of health and mental wellbeing and develop life skills, gain self confidence and independence.

Working with pupils at many schools such as Morpeth Road Primary Academy, Walkergate Primary and The Blyth Academy, we have developed tailored programmes with these aims in mind.

Examples of established projects:-

Career Rides: working with large local businesses to engage the students in different business sectors, we ride from the school to the business and have a days experience with the staff.

Local nature and history rides: Lindisfarne has both the local nature reserve and its interesting history. We visit the bird hides, go rock pooling, do some beach art and visit the lime kilns.

Transitional rides: Feeder primary school students who we have already worked with to develop a passion for healthy living and cycling, we encourage new friendships before encountering senior school where we continue to work with them and it gives the students some continuity in their school experience in what can be a testing time for some, we further enhance their independence and life skills into students teenage years by teaching new routes to their senior schools and onto colleges. They learn to be more responsible and supportive of others.

Our tailored schemes can provide comprehensive cycling support, from guiding and coaching, to providing cycling equipment and advice including fleet maintenance, local route awareness, nutrition and safety.

We provide -

Bike handling skills training - to teach pupils how to cycle efficiently, basic biomechanics and improve their balance and coordination.

Road safety awareness - to enable the pupils to ride on roads safely and independently, familiarisation with personal safety and equipment, respect for other road and infrastructure users and an introduction to relevant aspects of the Highway Code. This normally begins with lessons within the safe confines of the school grounds and then guided short tours locally, building on previous knowledge and skills acquired.

Bike maintenance - to learn about the basic mechanics and physics of the bike, knowledge from which could be adapted to other applications in life, whilst also fostering a sense of personal responsibility and safety.

Mini cycling tours into Northumberland - to discover places of interest and facilitate learning by providing some context to the material delivered in class.

International tours - Morpeth Road Primary Academy, Blyth each year provide a unique experience to their students to ride part of the route ridden by the professional tour around the Italian Dolomites. West Denton Primary, Newcastle rode from their school to Amsterdam City centre and back, via the ferry of course!
